Under Barbara Bachmann’s direction, the E. coli Genetic Stock Center expanded until it maintained > 7,000 strains and sent out > 4,000 samples a year to scientists. Her publications in 1983 and 1991 of the complete genetic map of E. coli as of those years were among the most cited publications in biology. In 1986, she received the American Society for Microbiology’s J. Roger Potter Award for excellence in the maintenance of culture collections.
