Hortense Powdermaker (1896–1970), Ph.D.
Hortense Powdermaker was an American anthropologist who earned a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics in 1928 and studied with Bronislaw Malinoski. Between 1930–1937, she was affiliated with the Institute of Human Relations at Yale University. During her fieldwork, she carried out one of the first participant-observer community studies on the Black church. She served as the President of the American Ethnological Society.
