Jane Anne Russell (1911–1967), Ph.D.

Jane Russell was a biochemist and endocrinologist. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Physiology (1938–1941) and an instructor (1941–1950). She has been a cited example of academic discrimination, especially after receiving the Ciba Award in 1946. In 1950, she began an appointment as an Assistant Professor in Emory University’s Department of Biochemistry. She was promoted to an Associate Professor in 1953 and became a Professor in 1965 (Stronck, p. 452). In 1961, she received the Upjohn Award. Her research was on pituitary extracts and glucose utilization in adrenal hormones.
