Leona Baumgartner (1902–1991), MD, Ph.D.
Dr. Baumgartner was a physician and a government official. She held a Yale fellowship 1929–1930 and received her Ph.D. in Bacteriology in 1932 and her MD in 1934, both from Yale. In 1970, she was awarded Yale’s Lucius Wilbur Cross Medal. Dr. Baumgartner served as Commissioner of Health for New York City and as Assistant Secretary of State in the Johnson administration. She served as Professor of Public Health at the Medical College of Cornell University 1958–1966.
