Sarbani Basu, Ph.D.
Professor and Chair, Department of Astronomy
Sarbani Basu is an astrophysicist who specializes in the study of the Sun and other stars using data on stellar oscillations (star quakes). These data allow the study of the internal structure and dynamics of stars. Her research interest lies in studying the variations in the Sun over time-scales that are of societal relevance. She was honored with the George Hale Prize of the Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society in 2018.
Professor Basu found that signatures of a new solar cycle appear years before the first sunspots of a solar cycle appear on the surface of the Sun. Photo credit: Sarbani Basu
