Coming Out at YDS

What is National Coming Out Day?

National Coming Out Day was started in the U.S. by two LGBTQ+ activists, Rob Eichberg and Jean O'Leary, in response to the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Since 1988, members of the LGBTQ+ community have observed Coming Out Day annually on October 11th, the anniversary of the march. National Coming Out Day celebrates the act of coming out, while recognizing the transformative power of LGBTQ+ visibility.
