James Wendell Queenan was born in 1884 in Derby, Connecticut to James Henry Queenan and Agnes Askin Queenan. He was a graduate of Derby High School, and completed the civil engineering course at Sheffield Scientific School at Yale. While at Yale, he lived with his family. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. After graduating from Yale, he served as the caretaker of an estate in Ansonia, Connecticut for nearly 20 years before moving to Inwood, New York, where he worked as a clerk for the US Postal Service. He worked there until his retirement in 1941. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Jackson in 1911. He died in 1942 in Mt. Vernon, New York.
