Moral Judgment in Evaluating Disease: Some Pictures for Discussion

The Bar

The Bar, 1938, Lloyd Wulf, U.S.A. 1913-1965, Lithograph, Purchased through the John F. Fulton Fund 2006

This 40 year old man presented to the ED via ambulance after being found lying on the sidewalk in front of a local bar covered with vomitus. He was confused and tremulous and was noted to be responding to noises that were not present. He has been admitted to this hospital three times in the past six months with similar presenting symptoms.

Lloyd Wulf was an American artist best known for the work he completed under the California Federal Art Project in the 1930’s. This project was an arm of the New Deal, and commissioned artists across the nation to produce art for public spaces. Lloyd sought to capture everyday scenes in the San Francisco area, an effort that resulted in pieces reflective of life at the height of the Great Depression.
