Sofia Simmonds (1912–2007), Ph.D.
Sofia Simmonds helped to organize the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. Her research was focused on the study of amino acid metabolism of bacteria. In 1969, she was awarded the Garvan Medal from the American Chemical Society. She served on the editorial board of Journal of Biological Chemistry and co-authored, with her husband, Professor Joseph Fruton, General Biochemistry, a textbook published by Wiley in 1953 and published in a second edition in 1958.
