Biography
Charles Alston Smythwick was born in Warrenton, North Carolina in 1877. He also lived in New Jersey and in Connecticut early in his life. He earned a bachelor's degree from Shaw University in 1904. He graduated from the Yale Law School in 1908 and began a career as an attorney, practicing in New York City from 1908 to 1920 and briefly in Bridgeport, Connecticut from 1920 to 1921. In the 1920s, he worked as an economic investigator in Philadelphia and then was independently employed, possibly in real estate. From 1933 to 1941, he was president of the Edith Realty Company in New York City. Smythwick married Pleasant B. Douglas in 1904 and they had three children. Pleasant died in 1912. Smythwick remarried in 1914, to Eleanor Frances Tucker in Waterbury, and they had two children together before they divorced in 1926. Smythwick died in New York City in 1941.
