Biography
Van Sylvester Whitted was born in 1894 in Philadelphia. An accomplished musician, he attended the Yale School of Music from 1916-1917. He went on to graduate from Howard University with a degree in music in 1922. In 1926 he married Cora Louise Redmond. He worked as a music teacher and as an organist and choir director, including for the St. Mark’s Methodist Episcopal Church in New York. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He died in New York in 1976.
