Kofi Attoh Amartey

Biography
Kofi Attoh Amartey was born on November 29, 1894, in Accra, Gold Coast (now Ghana). He eventually moved to Montreal, Canada and immigrated to the United States in 1923. In 1932, he graduated from Lane College with a bachelor of arts. He then attended Northwestern University where he received his master's degree in 1935. He wrote his thesis on African marriage customs. In 1938, he attended Yale Graduate School for a year where he studied anthropology.1
By 1942, he was residing in Chicago, Illinois and was employed by the Pullman Company. He later worked as a porter in San Antonio. According to the 1950 U.S. Census, Amartey lived in Orlando, Florida where he worked as a history and geography teacher. He died on January 5, 1961, in Colbert Nursing Home in Gresham, Oregon. He was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in the city.2
